Tracking and Enforcing BESS Performance Contracts Just Got Easier

April 16, 2025

BESS performance guarantees and warranties are packed with critical metrics, from availability, round-trip efficiency (RTE), equivalent full cycles (RTE), State of Health (SoH) to operating conditions like temperature. However, tracking these metrics properly and mapping them to the terms of the contract is a challenge. In this article, we describe how you can use our updated Warranty and Guarantee Tracker.

As battery energy storage systems (BESS) become increasingly central to grid resilience and renewable integration, asset managers and operations leaders face a growing challenge: ensuring that every system performs both contractually as well as technically.

Whether it's a long-term warranty from an OEM, a performance guarantee from an integrator, or service level obligations under an LTSA, these contracts define the financial backbone of energy storage projects. To uphold these agreements, tracking and proving performance is essential – especially when thresholds are missed or disputes arise.

The challenge: Performance risk is everywhere – but hard to pin down

BESS performance guarantees and warranties are packed with critical metrics, from availability, round-trip efficiency (RTE), equivalent full cycles (RTE), State of Health (SoH) to operating conditions like temperature. However, tracking these metrics properly and mapping them to the terms of the contract is a challenge.

  • Data is scattered across different systems and tools, making it challenging to gather the right information to track everything centrally.
  • Contracts vary depending on the supplier or integrator – both in terms of definition and variability, meaning there is no one-size-fits all approach.
  • Even if you are tracking contract conditions for one system from one integrator, this may not be applicable for all systems.
  • Responsibility can be unclear when performance drops. Is it the battery OEM, integrator, O&M provider or because of aggressive operation?

The solution: Introducing our Warranty and Guarantee Tracker

To help solve your challenges, we have revamped our Warranty and Guarantee Tracker to help you track and enforce contract performance metrics.

Monitor the metrics that matter

You can track 15 different KPIs, including SoH, Availability, Round-TripEfficiency, Cumulative or daily EFC, and C-rate, and more. With flexible configuration options, you can choose which KPIs you want to view on your dashboard, their aggregation (min, mean, or max) as well as their operational status (charging, discharging, operation or resting). Overall, there are 50different configuration options, meaning you can be sure to map all relevant warranty contract data here.

Identify warranty breaches automatically

The Warranty and Guarantee tracker shows you exactly where breaches have occurred and using TWAICE Energy Analytics, you can find the root cause of any warranty breaches. (Of course, your Customer Success Manager can also help here!)

Access an audit trail

Provide data to your integrator or supplier for documentation, reporting and dispute resolution. For example, the Warranty and Guarantee Tracker provides an overview of all contract breaches for a particular KPI, and when they occurred.TWAICE customers have also provided screenshots of TWAICE Energy Analytics to suppliers to document warranty breaches.

Benefit from an independent 3rd party for objective tracking:

Using TWAICE Energy Analytics for warranty and performance guarantee tracking has the additional benefit that we are an independent, objective 3rd party you can trust.

Conclusion: Stay on top of performance contracts

These updates to the Warranty and Guarantee tracker make it easy for you to:

  • Track most relevant performance KPIs
  • Identify warranty breaches
  • Substantiate your warranty claims with data

With our updated Warranty and Guarantee Tracker, staying on top of your BESS performance obligations has never been easier.

How TWAICE’s Usable Energy Makes System Availability More Transparent

Availability is a widely used term in the battery energy storage industry and is fundamental to operations. It is often the first metric asset owners check when they see revenue decline. However, simply knowing the system’s availability does not provide any insights into how it can be improved. The real challenge remains: identifying the root cause of poor availability and knowing what actions to take.
